We woke earlier than intended, not because we were eager to depart (we would have preferred to stay and see the Baltic), but because the noise of the ship getting ready to dock had become quite familiar, almost like an alarm clock.
Thankfully, when we rose, our cases had disappeared from the corridor outside our cabin and were safely in the system, meaning we wouldn’t see them again until disembarkation. Despite having breakfast before 7 am, we had to share a table with a pair of old wrinklies who were very keen to chat.
Unable to return to the cabin, we didn’t bother going on deck since the good old British weather had made its appearance with a shower, so we took the elevator up to deck 13 and the Crow’s Nest. We were the first there and settled in front of the panoramic windows, waiting for our turn to disembark. Soon, other passengers joined us, but we were engrossed in our books and barely noticed until the Tannoy announced the departure of another group. We weren’t due to leave until 9:45 am, so we were surprised when we were called nearly an hour early (well done, P&O).
Leaving the ship was “plain sailing.” Our cases were easy to find, and our transfer bus point was right there, so we were directed straight onto the coach! When we arrived at the car park, we were pleased to see that our car had been placed at the front of the queue, and I was even handed my keys first!
The journey back to Leicestershire should have been a breeze, but Friday traffic on the motorways meant it was stop-start all the way, and it seemed to take forever. By the time we finally arrived home, I was pretty fed up with driving.
Summary: Sue didn’t want a fuss made of her 60th birthday, and she certainly got her wish. Norway proved to be a stunningly picturesque destination, offering jaw-dropping views at every turn. The Oriana was a lovely, friendly ship with a superb captain, and it provided excellent food and entertainment throughout the journey. As an adult-only ship, it had its distinct advantages, offering a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. Both of us would happily sail on her again, should the opportunity arise.
